Katarzyna Reteruk 22 from Poland died while riding her bicycle from her job on DE1 near Lewes on April 28.
Reteruk's death is the latest in a continuing series of severe bicycle car crashes along Route 1 between Lewes and Dewey Beach. DelDOT has responded by sponsoring a bicyclists safety campaign every summer, however the efforts to date fall short of what is needed which is a comprehensive plan to address bicycle and pedestrian safety.
But to no avail, despite that fact that a portion of Route 1 is a signed bike route DELDOT will soon remove the bike bus lane to relieve traffic congestion. This "improvement" that values traffic flow more than people will only help to continue the carnage on a road that has no alternate route.
